Pukaha National Wildlife Centre is NZ's most established captive breeding facility located just 20-minutes north of Masterton.
Set in 942 hectares of ancient podocarp forest, Pukaha is home to many endangered species including takahe, kokako, kakariki, hihi (stichbird), kaka and several kiwi including Manukura, the white kiwi. While you are here you can visit the theatre for a number of short films or take a peek at a working kiwi nursery. The Kaka Cafe overlooking the takahe - just watch out for the kaka! These cheeky parrots are regular visitors and love to star in your photographs (please remember to not feed the birds).
Visitors can join one of our daily talks (see below) or book an exclusive Behind the Scenes tour for a more detailed look at conservation works. We also offer Night Tours (a wonderful way to listen for wild kiwi and view our glow worm cave), birthday parties and special rates for locals (just bring in proof of your address to get 50% off).
Our feeds are at:
11.00am - Tuatara talk and feed
12 noon - Kiwi talk
1.30pm - Eel feed
3.00pm - Kaka feed
The free-flight aviary also provides a chance to see whio (blue duck) up close while walkers can explore easy-to-walk trails that weave through native forest. The café serves great coffee beside the interactive gallery ? looking for creepy crawlies in the rata tree will be a highlight for kids of all ages.

Following is feedback posted by visitors to this property:Behind the Scenes was informative and really interesting.
My grandson (10 yrs) really enjoyed the experience, had an abundance of questions and found the day exciting. The staff who took us around were so great and made it a special day. I have been recommending this experience to my friends.

Great day out
Our guide was interesting - as there was only the two of us with our guide we were able to ask all our questions and we enjoyed our whole day at Mt Bruce.
