Aukawa Road Purangi
Price range: $- - $-
Otunahe Scenic Reserve is a private reserve, covering approximately 70 hectares and is a wonderful example of mature native forest.
The area has a rich diversity and is home to many of our native species. Kiwi, bellbird, tui, North Island robin, NZ falcon, whitehead, kereru, and fernbird. You will not see kiwi they are asleep deep in burrows but you may see their probe holes and footprints.
The track follows some farmland, then enters a mature forest. You head down a steep well formed track, then follow a small stream almost to its headwater, past many tiny native orchids. From here you head up out of the creek and stand beside the mighty Rimu trees. These magnificent specimens are thought to be about 800 to 1000 years old. Find out about the larger kiwi protection project at the TSB Trust information hut.
You can do the walk as a self guided option which will take about three hours, or have a guided walk which will have about 90 minutes of walking. The guided option includes checking out the status of the sleeping kiwi via telemetry equipment.
