The 225 hectare ecosanctuary is a ground breaking conservation project that has reintroduced nearly 20 species of native wildlife back into the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years.

Explore the sanctuary valley - a safe haven for some of New Zealand's rarest native animals like the kaka - our playful forest parrot - and dozens more species found nowhere else in the world. Our popular ranger talks provide fascinating stories about some of our most exciting residents, such as kaka, weta and tuatara. These free talks run two times a day during the week, and four times per day during weekends/public holidays.
