We have waited more than 150 years to tell our story.....
?Lost In Our Own Land? at Tamaki Heritage Village in the Heathcote Valley, is a world first heritage encounter sharing the true story of colonisation and its impact upon the indigenous people of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the Maori.
Within this spectacular 3 ½ hour evening encounter, ?Lost In Our Own Land? shares the true and dramatic story of one tribe, torn between two worlds during the 1800's. ?Lost in Our Own Land? is shared by a cast of more than 30 actors and traversing two villages ? one Maori and one European. It spans more than 20 acres of land and almost 200 years of New Zealand history.
Through the descendants of these early South Island Maori, experience for yourself the impact of a rebel faction of musket wielding warriors wrecking havoc upon their own people ? a deeply traditional tribe at the village of Matuku Moana on the land of Ihutai. Find yourself amidst the turmoil Maori faced as they were forced to choose between the promise of the new ways and the significance of their ancient values during European settlement.
As the story unfolds, the Maori Village, a fortified Pa, and the Colonial township come to life and two cultures begin to find a way forward together as two cultures and one nation?..
Lost in Our Own Land? is your opportunity to see what we saw, hear what we heard ? but most of all, feel what we felt....

We enjoyed this interactive experience of the Maori Muskett Wars. Better than a static play and you could join in by talking to the actors in their roles as Maori warriors or the missionaries. The town stores were lit up and would have liked a bit more time to look in all the windows. The tram ride took us to the town and dinner. The meal was very good, especially the seafood chowder and the home-made pavlova. The cast entertained us with some singing and dancing and then sat amongst us. This also gave us an opputunity to ask question about the show and how they came to be involved. We would recommend this show and dinner to our friends when visiting either Rotorua or Christchurch.
