Because the cottage was marketed like boutique accommodation we were surprised to find it was just an old garage sleepout with grass growing out filthy gutters. The lawns hadn't been mowed for a long time and everything was overgrown. The "cottage" itself needed a really good clean (especially floors) and the bed smelled of damp and mold which was gross. The bathroom (which has a curtain as a door) has no fan to get rid of moisture or smells so it all ends up in the bedroom. The toilet didn't really flush properly. The water is so strongly chlorinated that we had to buy our own. There is a lovely view off the back veranda but everything is covered in cobwebs and dirt, and the table was smeared with something. The broken front door glass is patched with sellotape. When we removed the bin liner we found a lot of mold and smell. All this is fine for a cheap and cheerful low-end bach, cleaned by the occupants, but not something marketed as "hilltop ruapehu". Not worth the 3 hour drive.

We must have gone at a bad time.communication was great, caretakers were lovely but our stay was awful. Bbq was filthy & didn't have a gas bottle. Les immediately got one. Spent 40 minutes cleaning bbq, still unperturbed, until hubby's foot went through the floor next to bbq & he put his back out, floorboard under was damp rotted crumbled. Kitchen looked in decent order. But microwave top was filthy with spatterings. Cracked wine glass &lip marks on glasses & brown marks on some plates. Rooms were beautifully presented but underside of the pillowcases were marked with body fluid, saliva/ perspiration/ ? should i continue? the cobwebs? the dirty windowsills? the door handle on the slider that is broken? the lack of keys for the library? so no dvd's?games in disrepair? awesome wooden puzzle but so sticky that your fingers stuck to it.? pan full of oil in the oven? left a day early disappointed! sent feedback to owner with photos, apology received. Waste of hard earned money & time.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage thanks to our lovely hosts jen & les of whom presented the cottage in a very clean & cosy condition, with heater , lights , & tv going, on arrival, making us feel very welcome.while we had no problems with the driveway in our 2 wheel drive car but it could be improved very easily by adding a little gravel to the sides of the concrete tracks around the corner area. We enjoyed the very rural setting of the cottage along with its peace ful privacy & views. Many thanks jen & les.
