Experience Accommodation in Gisborne's stunning, rugged backcountry as you leave SH2 and weave through the unique bluffs and rock sculptures on the 13 kms up Makaretu Road to Haurata.
The main accommodation at Haurata is a very comfortable four bedroom holiday home set in the large park-like garden surroundings. The private rhododendron garden with deciduous, evergreen and organic fruit trees provides the ultimate place to relax.
The avenues of cherry trees, spiral garden ceremonial area and old woolshed are all yours to explore and enjoy exclusively as a guest of Haurata.
A narrow track leads from the garden into the native bush and beautiful rocky river. The river is a playground for the adventurous with rockslides, swimming holes and waterfalls. This is a truly magnificent experience for nature lovers.

This old shearers quarters has been painted and decorated tastefully with a vintage shabby chic feel.
The authentic building is set in the beautiful Haurata garden and is compatible with the main house if both buildings are used by large groups of up to 14 people.

When the mist comes down to obliterate views there is a cosy log fire and even internet connection for the laptop carriers, (maybe needs a few more board games for those without). The house is a home and feels like you can settle in,so not just a base. We did manage to fit a couple of walks during the mist gaps, definitely no disappointment here.

Excellent few days away in a fantastic location
Six of us (in our early 60s) enjoyed a few days at Haurata. We all loved the place! Plenty walks of all levels, lovely spot to relax and great food supplied for special birthday dinner. Thanks Jane & Rachel, we were spoilt. We plan to visit again hopefully in Spring when the cheery trees & rhododendrons are in flower.

Amazing experience!
We had 2 nights staying in the Backpackers at Haurata High Country farm. It was an amazing experience. Very friendly hosts and beautiful walks.

Stunning landscapes, adventurous walks and totally relaxing homestead.. all to ourselves!
We still think of our stay and wish we had more than 4 days. There are walks to suit all from adventurous and thrilling to easy but still breathtaking. Very comfortable and practical homestead perfect for relaxing after a good days adventure. And the water is so soo sweet!
